This is the best sea-going story I've read since Moby Dick.

Unfortunately, I haven't read all that many nautical novels, so that's not saying a whole lot by itself. However, even if I had read a lot, I think I would still rate this one very high.

The Legend of the Firefish begins the Trophy Chase Trilogy. Since Trophy Chase is the name of the ship in the story, I'm assuming the next two books will also involve a lot of seafaring.

Packer Throme's father told him many stories of the great firefish - a sea monster that lives in the depths, whose meat gives extraordinary strength and energy to any who eat it. When his own life plans fall apart, Packer returns to his home, determined to find the feeding grounds of the firefish. Doing so would provide his home village with a source of prosperity, or so he believes. Unfortunately, the only ship that has a chance of succeeding in this quest is the Trophy Chase, which belongs to the famous pirate, Scat Wilkins. Packer stows away on the ship, hoping to earn the right to join the pirates and guide them to the site his father identified. Unfortunately, pirates don't exactly appreciate stowaways...

Packer leaves behind his beloved, Panna Seline, to undertake this quest, but she's not so easily deterred. Setting out to follow him, she encounters her own struggles and mysteries along the way, leading to a shocking conclusion.

The Legend of the Firefish is really a fantasy novel, as it is set in an imaginary land, but you won't find any magic or anything. What you will find are monsters, plenty of action, adventure, and deep faith. The story crackles along with much buckling of swash, deception & intrigue, and high adventure on the high seas.

Perhaps the best news of all came after the last page... where it was announced that the second book in the trilogy will come out in less than four months. Highly Recommended.
